A station's kW (kilowatt) rating is the maximum rate at which it can deliver power to your battery — think of it as the size of the pipe, not how much water actually flows through it.
Higher kW means faster — up to a point
A 350 kW station can theoretically charge much faster than a 50 kW one, but your car will only draw as much power as its own onboard charging system allows, so a 150 kW-capable car plugged into a 350 kW station still charges at roughly 150 kW.
Charging speed isn't constant
Even at a compatible high-kW station, your car pulls the most power when the battery is nearly empty and tapers off as it approaches full — which is why fast charging from 10% to 80% is quick, but 80% to 100% takes disproportionately longer.
Why the app shows kW per connector
Checking a station's maximum kW output before you drive tells you whether it's worth a special trip for a fast top-up, or better saved for a slower overnight-style charge.
Is a 50 kW station considered fast charging?
Yes — anything DC and above roughly 25 kW is generally classified as fast charging, though 150 kW and above is now common at newer highway stations.
