Best Practices for Charging Stops on a Long Drive

A few small habits separate a quick, painless charging stop from a long, frustrating one — most of them come down to timing and preparation rather than luck.

Precondition the battery before you arrive

Many EVs let you tell the car you're heading to a fast charger, which warms the battery in advance and can meaningfully cut charging time on arrival, especially in cold weather.

Charge to 80%, not 100%, mid-trip

Since charging speed drops sharply after 80%, stopping there and continuing your drive is almost always faster overall than waiting for a full charge, unless the next leg genuinely requires the extra range.

Use the wait productively

A 20-30 minute fast-charging stop is enough time for a bathroom break, a coffee, and a quick stretch — planning stops near amenities rather than isolated chargers makes the wait feel like a normal rest stop, not dead time.

Should I unplug the moment charging slows down?

For a road trip, yes — once you've hit 80% or your planned target, continuing the drive is usually more time-efficient than waiting through the slower final charging curve.
